Day 4: My parents

It's not possible to talk about significant people and experiences in my life without talking about the two people who have been most influential in shaping who I am today. To put it simply: my parents are amazing. It's hard to put into words how much I love them and how thankful I am for the love they have shown me.

My childhood was a cocoon of love and safety. Written and unwritten regulations in our home included: dinner together as family every night, limited hours of TV, no sugar cereal (except for a snack and Christmas present), chores must be completed, one bottle of pop a week (and we had to pay a quarter to have it!), you always go to church on Sunday morning and Sunday night and more. The five of us shared one bathroom, one telephone, one black and white TV and three cars. We always had everything we needed and even were able to have things we wanted (especially if mom found those items as at garage sales!). Through it all, Mom and Dad emphasized the value of family, of loving others and above all loving God. As I've worked with college students and seen troubles and pain some of them encounter as a result of their childhood I'm reminded how blessed I am. I'm so thankful for the self-esteem, the confidence, the joy and all that was nurtured in me by my parents.

As I left home and then eventually moved out-of-state, their influence in my life has continued. I love moments I spent in their home and times we explore new things. Mom and Dad, Thank you for modeling what it means to follow Christ. Thank you for loving me despite my faults and selfishness. Thank you for allowing me to be me. Thank you for the adventure you've provided over the years. Thank you for so many big and little things that all measure up to you being fabulous parents.

We are the blessed ones. We praise God that He entrusted such a loving, enthusiastic, event planner, on the go daughter! Thanks for all you continue to give us.
