bits and pieces

I love people.  I love meeting new people.  I love keeping in touch with old friends.  I love learning others' stories.  I love cheering for others.  I love laughing together and feel privileged when it's time to cry together.  I love celebrating anything and everything.  I love the way people show me glimpses of God.  It's simple, I'm a people person to the core. 

I spent this past weekend with eighteen strangers/fellow cohort members at an orientation for the doctoral journey I'm just beginning.  It's always interesting to enter a situation where you know very little about a group of people (and they know very little about you), but you're keenly aware they will be influential to your life.  My work often puts me in those situations and I count myself blessed to have been impacted by so many people along the way.  However as I've started this new season, I have been especially aware of the family and friends I love deeply and their role in my life.

On Saturday one of our professors read us this poem and it captures so beautifully how I'm feeling:  so thankful for the many who have shaped me into who I am today and hopeful for all that is to come.

Bits and pieces, bits and pieces.
People.
People important to you,
People unimportant to you cross your life, touch it with love and move on.
There are people who leave you, and you breathe a sigh of relief and wonder why you ever came into contact with them.
There are people who leave you, and you breathe a sigh of remorse and wonder why they had to go and leave such a gaping hole.
Children leave parents, friends leave friends.
Acquaintances move on.
People change homes.
People grow apart.
Enemies hate and move on.
Friends love and move on.
You think of the many people who have moved in and out of your hazy memory.
You look at those present and wonder.
I believe in God’s master plan in lives.
He moves people in and out of each other’s lives, and each leaves His mark on the other.
You find you are made up of bits and pieces of all who have ever touched your life.
You are more because of them, and would be less if they had not touched you.
Pray that you accept the bits and pieces in humility and wonder, and never question and never regret.
