fifteen years ago

Amy & Carla in Austria, 1996


Somehow I told two different stories today about my trip to Austria in July of 1996. July of 1996 -- 15 years ago! How is it possible that 15 years have passed since this trip?  The time I spent in Austria is still a time I look back on as a life-changing trip.  It was significant in my spiritual journey and sparked a love for adventure and travel.

One memory that flooded my mind today was some of the styles my friends and I wore on this trip.  Tonight I dug through my photos in hopes of finding a photo of Carla and I on a night out in Salzburg sporting short dresses with a large denim shirt wrapped around our waists and hiking boots for our footwear. The above photo is the best I could find... I wish you could see a full-length picture of these outfits. Really, we thought we were looking sooo good.

My how styles change.

And I've changed too.

In remembering times from this trip I've been thinking of how much I've changed in these 15 years. I've experienced so many new things; I've traveled to so many places. I've laughed (a whole lot) and I've cried my share of tears. Many friendships have grown deeper and I've encountered new ones as well. I learned about waxing my eyebrows and the joys of pedicures. I now use a cell phone daily and easily download music from itunes (instead of buying singles and making mix-tapes).  I've found new love and experienced loss. I took up running and went on to do a marathon. I've gone back to school for a masters degree, started a career in higher ed and moved across the country. I threw out my oversized denim shirt and have chosen only to wear my hiking boots on the trail. I've learned more about God's love for me and the world and spent hours in prayer.

But, deep down the woman I was in the mid-nineties on those Austria streets is quite similar to the woman who seeks to make sense of this life I've been given in 2011.

15 years have flown by. And, tonight I'm thankful for the memories of Österreich and for the moments that make up today.
