Day 15: Philadelphia

I fell hard for Philadelphia. It truly was love at first sight.


Somehow in the spring of 2005 doors started to fly wide open and led me to take a position and move across the country to the city of brotherly love. I knew very little of this city that would soon capture my heart but I somehow knew I was supposed to be a Philadelphian. I quickly discovered the benefits of living in a large city -- amazing restaurants on every corner, people who are longing to live in community and include others with open arms, the convenience of public transportation, the beauty of diversity and so many new opportunities. Oh, there are challenges too but the good memories outweigh the bad.

In the mere year I lived in this city I was impacted tremendously. My eyes were opened to poverty in America and systematic racism. I learned about my white privilege and was challenged to do something about it. I grew in my understanding of the beginning of our nation. I tried new ethnic foods. I learned to live without a car. I discovered what it was like to be a long-distance daughter and sister and cousin... and an up-close cousin when one of them moved to Philly as well!

Philly will always hold a special place in my heart. Everyone should visit Philadelphia. And, if you want a tour guide, I'd love to meet you there!
