Day 12: Family t-shirts

About six years ago my extended family started a new tradition: buying / making matching t-shirts to celebrate or honor a family member. Oh, yes, my family is a bit quirky... but I love it so so much!


It all commenced with the baby-cousin's high school graduation and a brilliant idea for our entire family to wear shirts that shouted Sally! in bright white letters on the blue background (without her knowledge). Ever since the hits have kept on coming: a shirt honoring Grandma's 93rd birthday with "it's me, Grandma D." in her handwriting on the sage green shirt, a brown and pink shirt that said "Team Judy" to support my Aunt Judy in her battle with cancer (about 100 people ordered one of these shirts and sent Judy pictures of them in this shirt), and most recently a Sara is (insert math formula here) to celebrate my sister's birthday at the state fair. Now, others may just see these shirts as peculiar -- I see them as an example of why I love my family.

I have been so influenced by each one of my family members. Every one of them! People often say to me "you have more cousins than anyone I know!" but what I think they mean is that I talk about my cousins more than anyone they know!! I do love them and am so thankful for the role they play in my life. I consider it a gift to spend time with any of them - anywhere! And, I really love when we all get to spend time together.

Here's what I love about being with family:
I love laughing with them! My family is full of goofy, incredible laughs and hearing any of these laughs immediately spark laughter within me.

I can be myself. There's just something about people who have known you your entire life -- and about people with whom you share so much in common -- that allows you to just be who you are. I feel completely free when I'm with my family and that causes me to want to try new things, to challenge myself, to share my heart and to simply be.

I feel deeply connected to them. Even when we're not together -- I feel so close to them. We've shared such moments of joy together but also some difficult and painful seasons... together these join our hearts even across the miles.

I'm looking forward to the next time we can all be together. And, anticipating another family t-shirt, soon....
