Day 6: Cousins Coffee

If you stopped by the Coffee Grounds on a Tuesday night in the late nineties you would have come across a group of cousins sipping hot drinks and chatting the night away. These
"cousin coffees" were orchestrated bonding as we each journeyed through different stages of our twenties. During the years we spent our Tuesday evenings together some of the cousins graduated from college, many of us looked for and changed jobs, and others contemplated and eventually moved away. There was always much laughter, at times intense debates and quite often a game or two. Now these cousins are scattered across the country -- Sara is still in Minneapolis, Paul lives in DC, Chris in Sandstone Minnesota, Andy and Tim in North Dakota, Tia in Wisconsin and Kelly in Philadelphia -- making weekly gatherings impossible.


I so believe in family! Looking back, the connection with these cousins was significant in such a pivotal time of life. I'm thankful for the bond that was created, especially with the Nathan family. These connections led to Chris and I co-leading a trip of college students Tijuana -- it was so great to go with my cousin! There was also a cousins trip to the Nathan home in Leeds, North Dakota with a side trip to the geographical center of North America in Rugby, ND. Near the end of cousin coffee nights Andy, Chris & Tim's father died and then soon after Andy left for Iraq and Afghanistan. I wish there were better ways to stay connected with these guys -- I so appreciated their love for me and how they spoke into my life.

Writing this on a Tuesday night makes me long for a white mocha and good conversation with family. What good, good days those were.
