Remembering Jon


I was reminded that today would have been Jon Lute's 30th birthday. Jon was married to my cousin Jackie and died almost 4 years ago when he was only 26. In some ways it seems like only yesterday we were celebrating his 26th birthday on a warm Memorial Day weekend in South Dakota with DQ ice cream cake and in other ways it feels like a different world.
This plant is from Jon's funeral in July 2004. At that point I had no idea a year later I'd be moving to Pennsylvania. I didn't realize applying for a seemingly unattainable job in Philly would lead me first to living in the city of brotherly love and then a year later to the countryside of south central PA. I didn't know how much I'd grow in my awareness of injustice in cities and racism in our country. I didn't know how valuable a good church family is to me. Jackie didn't know how the Lord would provide a wonderful husband and partner in my best friend's little brother Marcus. Four years ago I lived in the same city as my cousins Kelly & Angie and now living 2 hours from them I see them WAY more often -- I didn't know what a blessing it would be to have these all grown up little cousins in my new state.
Well, I could go on and on but let's just say tonight I am so aware of how all the moments of the past four years have together added up to so many changes and hard times and patiently waiting for my new surroundings to feel as comfortable as a DQ birthday cake with family. As the plant has grown, I have too... and I am growing exactly where I am supposed to be... but a small part of me wishes I was back in South Dakota meeting 2 month old Elijah for the first time and celebrating Jon's 26 looking forward to the unknown.
