Agony of Defeat

Sometimes I'm not sure why I watch sports when I'm not rooting for one of the teams. Currently on my television I'm watching the Packers / Giants game on a fuzzy FOX station. Throughout the fourth quarter I've gone back and forth between wanting the Giants to win because of my extreme loyalty to the Vikings and thus a strong dislike of the Packers to wanting the Packers to win to represent my home region and because even though Bret Farve has caused my team heartache a number of times in the past he really does seem to be a nice guy. So, I waffle back and forth and so as the teams switch leads, you'd think I'd rejoice for the team in the lead but instead I automatically am drawn to the saddness of the team who is now losing. As the Giants lined up for their field goal for the win with only 4 seconds left I thought... poor Packers... but then as the Giants missed the field goal and caused the game to go to overtime was overwhelmed with empathy for the kicker and the Giants who will need to play more minutes in the bitter cold. And, everytime I watch games like these I think... why am I putting myself through this? If I didn't watch this live, the end result wouldn't have an effect on my emotions... but because I'm watching it I am flip flopping my loyalities and my emotions go for a ride. Why oh why do I do it to myself?

Side note: The Packers just lost in overtime. If you would have asked me before the game who I'd like to win I would have said "I want the Packers to lose". But now... watching poor Bret on the TV possibly end his career on this loss... I'm saddened and wish they would have won. I'm a basket case for sure.

Oh Amy... you make me laugh. I felt bad for him too, but then, Travis is a Packer fan. :-)

Dan says that you should write for ESPN.... I'm right there with you, sister! Either way, if the Patriots lose, I'll have one very sad husband.
